Questions families ask
How do we start?
Book a placement visit on our registration page. The teacher watches a few steps and suggests a grade, and tells you which classes have room.
Which grade is right for my child?
Most new dancers start in Grade 1, whatever their age. A dancer who has learned elsewhere may start higher; the teacher decides at the placement visit.
What should we wear?
A fitted top and leggings or cotton pants, bare feet or socks, and hair tied back. Ankle bells come later, when the teacher asks for them.
Do I need to stay?
Parents of younger dancers wait in the waiting area, and older dancers come on their own. Please tell us who collects.
May I watch?
Yes. The last Saturday class of each month is a watch class, and the annual performance and the studio recital are open to families.
What is a grade, and how does a dancer move up?
A grade is one of the school's five steps, from first steps to full pieces. The teacher decides when a dancer moves up, with the dancer and the family. There is no test and no set time.
What is a solo debut?
An arangetram is a dancer's first full solo program. It is the teacher's decision, made with the dancer and the family, and the school sets no age or time for it.
What are the extras?
A costume for the annual performance, a production charge and guest tickets, and ankle bells. Our how tuition works page says what each is for.
What if we miss a class?
A missed class can be made up in another class of the same grade, or the grade just below, within the same session.
Which languages do the teachers speak?
Classes are taught in English. Vidya speaks Tamil and Madhav speaks Hindi with families who prefer them.
